Lens Kit

will the AF on the 28-135 outperform the kit lens in speed? my old kit lens doesnt have USM AF. the lens i want to buy is a older model lens---28-135but it says it comes with USM. so would that be faster focusing? ( its not ring type USM) i also have the choice of getting the 17-85 mm wich has ring USM but it s more expensive. also, if you know.. wich of theses two lenses have better picture quality? The USM isn't actually referring to the speed but to the fact that it's quiet (USM = ultrasonic motor). It may be that USM motors are faster than non-USM but I'm not sure as I have not used non-USM. I used the 17-85mm all this summer and to be honest I wasn't very happy with it. It's a nice convenient range but it really lacks the ability to do any sort of shallow depth of field. Even with the aperture wide open it barely gets any blur. I guess if you never use background blur then this won't matter to you. Having purchased the 28-135mm at the end of the summer I'd say you should definitely get it over the 17-85mm. It's really fun to take shots with. Yes, you lose ~16mm (with 1.6x crop factor) on the wide end but if you keep your kit lens around you'll have your scenic shots covered (and who needs fast AF for them).
